Mold surfaces for consumer goods

The surfaces of consumer products are seen and touched every day. They shape first impressions, must complement the product design and withstand the demands of everyday use. NOVA Surface provides mold surface finishing for housings, covers, handles, controls and other high-quality plastic components.

Bringing design, feel and function together

A fine matte finish creates a different visual and tactile effect from a pronounced grain pattern. Grip areas often require different tactile properties from surfaces intended primarily for visual appeal. Gloss level, grain direction and transitions between multiple components also influence the finished product. We tailor these characteristics to the mold geometry, plastic material and intended brand perception.

  • Custom surface textures for housings and covers
  • Uniform matte finishes and specified gloss levels
  • Tactile differentiation of grip and control areas
  • Clean transitions between adjacent components
  • Consistent, reproducible finishing across related mold components

From the reference sample to the finished mold surface

The starting point may be a design concept, an existing sample or an already manufactured part. Our Design and CAD department adapts the texture to the mold geometry and assesses texture flow, scale, transitions and part-release requirements. Depending on the required result, the surface is produced using traditional chemical etching or laser texturing, either as standalone processes or in combination with preparatory mold polishing. Chemical Etching, Laser Texturing or in combination with preparatory Mold Polishing.

Technical coordination before surface finishing

Before the project begins, we determine which areas require surface finishing, which texture and gloss specifications apply, and how the finished surface will be inspected. This provides clear, traceable specifications for toolmaking, design and production. For modifications or localized damage, we also provide repairs, laser welding and on-site surface finishing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about surface finishes for consumer products

What types of consumer product components can be textured?

Typical applications include housings, covers, handles, controls and other visible or functional plastic surfaces. Feasibility depends on the mold geometry, material and required texture.

Can surface finishes be tailored to an existing product design?

Yes. Reference samples, graphics or existing texture data can be reviewed, digitally prepared and adapted to the mold geometry, grain direction and transitions.

What information is required for an initial assessment?

For an initial assessment, please provide CAD data or drawings, details of the mold steel and plastic material, a reference sample and specifications for the texture, tactile properties, gloss level and required completion date.
